How to convert HEIC to PNG on Windows 10 and 11

Windows can open HEIC images only after you install the free HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store. HEIC files also need the HEVC Video Extensions, which some PCs have preinstalled and others must buy for a small fee. Without them, Photos shows an error or a blank picture. Once both are installed, Paint can convert HEIC to PNG on Windows:

  • Right-click the HEIC file, choose Open with, then Paint.
  • In Paint, open the File menu and choose Save as.
  • Pick PNG picture, choose a folder and save.

Batch convert HEIC to PNG on Windows

Windows has no built-in way to convert a whole folder: Paint and Photos save one picture at a time, and this is a common question on Microsoft's own community forum. If Windows still cannot open the HEIC file

Preview is the default image viewer on a Mac, and its Export command converts HEIC to PNG on Mac in a few clicks:

  • Double-click the HEIC file to open it in Preview.
  • Choose File, then Export.
  • Set Format to PNG, pick where to save, and click Save.

Many files at once

In Finder, select all the HEIC files, Control-click (or right-click) the selection and choose Quick Actions, then Convert Image. Pick PNG as the format, choose an image size and click Convert to PNG. The copies are saved next to the originals. This quick action is part of recent versions of macOS; on older versions, open all the files in Preview, select them in the sidebar and use File, then Export Selected Images.

From the Photos app

The Photos app keeps your library in its own database. Select the pictures, choose File, then Export, then Export Photos, and set Photo Kind to PNG. Apple describes this export route in its article on using HEIF and HEVC media.

How to save HEIC as PNG on an iPhone

The iPhone has no Save as PNG button, so to save HEIC as PNG on an iPhone there are three practical routes:

  • In the browser: open this page in Safari, tap Choose HEIC files, pick the images and tap Save to Photos when they are done. This is the only route on the list that handles a batch in one go.
  • In the Files app: recent iOS versions can convert an image from its long-press menu (look under Quick Actions for a Convert Image option), with a choice of formats. If your version does not show it, use the browser.
  • For future photos: in Settings, open Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New pictures are saved as JPG instead of HEIC. That does not give you PNG, and it does not convert what you already took.

How to convert HEIC to PNG on Android

Many Android phones, including recent Samsung Galaxy models, can save pictures as HEIC or HEIF to save space, usually behind a high efficiency pictures option in the camera settings. Android has read the format since version 9, but most gallery apps have no option to save a copy as PNG. Some manufacturers' gallery apps offer a convert or save-as option in the photo menu; menu names differ between phones and versions.

The dependable method is the browser converter: open this page in Chrome, tap Choose HEIC files, pick the images and download the PNGs. They land in your Downloads folder, where every gallery app can see them.

What about Google Photos?

Google Photos shows HEIC images fine, but it has no option to export a PNG. When you download a picture from the Google Photos website you get the original file back, so a HEIC stays HEIC. Which method should you use?

All of these produce the same PNG. The difference is effort:

  • One photo on a Mac: Preview's Export is quickest. Several: the Convert Image quick action.
  • One photo on Windows with the extensions installed: Paint's Save as. Several, or no extensions: the browser converter.
  • On an iPhone or Android phone: the browser converter, then Save to Photos or Downloads.
